Persistent Organic Pollutants(POPs) & Phthalates

The substances mentioned below are restricted, under discussion for restriction or are proposed as Persistent Organic Pollutants(POPs) as per the Stockholm Convention, EU POPs Regulation and GADSL.

Persistent Organic Pollutants(POPs) are persistent, bio accumulative and toxic chemical substances which adversely affect the environment and human health.

Phthalates, a group of plasticizers, are hepatotoxic, teratogenic, and carcinogenic by nature.

  • Causes soil/air/water pollution & loss of biodiversity.
  • Build up in living organisms & contamination of food chain.
  • Disrupt internal organ functioning (nervous system, immune system, etc.)
  • In severe cases, may also cause cancer.
